Stitching FSL (free-standing lace) designs are so much FUN! They are easy to do and will marvel your guests when you tell them the stitching was done with your embroidery machine. This particular design has a wonderful candlewicking style center that adds texture and dimension to the finished project. If you have a multi-needle machine with a large hoop, just gang up several and stitch away!
Step 1:
Gather the materials and read through the instructions before beginning. Print out a paper template of the design. Use patriotic thread colors that will coordinate with your picnic setting or dinnerware. Hoop two layers of a fibrous type water soluble stabilizer in a large hoop (if there is one for your machine) to stitch several in one embroidery session. By doing this, you’ll be able to do several in no time at all.

Step 2:
Optional step. If you have embroidery software (this can also be done at the machine, too) you can gang up several doilies to stitch at once. To do this, load the hoop outline you’ll be using for your machine. Import the doily design. Copy and paste it three more times (or as many as will nicely fit in the hoop). Be sure to leave plenty of room between each design. Place each doily within the hoop area as it will stitch out. Save the design and then export it for stitching. This is one design you do not want to color sort. Each design needs to stitch individually before moving on to the next.

Step 3:
Load the design on the machine, place the hoop on the machine, and do a check to make sure the design clears the hoop. Start the machine and stitch the design. It is really fun to watch this design stitch!

Step 4:
Move on to the remaining designs and stitch them.

Step 5:
After all the designs have finished stitching, remove the designs from the hoop and just generally cut away the excess stabilizer.

Step 6:
Read the instructions on the stabilizer and rinse each piece only until the holes are free of stabilizer—most of the stabilizer should remain in the piece so it will be stiff when it dries. Place the rinsed pieces on a clean towel and pat them dry. Open up the towel and then let the designs air dry.

Congratulations on creating patriotic doilies for summertime snacks and picnics. Create several sets so you can have little hostess gifts, too!
