Final Product: What You Will Create

    Preface:
Make the day at the beach extra special by decorating a purchased bag with embroidery.

    Step 1:
Gather the materials and read through the instructions before beginning. Print out a paper template of the design with color sequence.

    Step 2:
Measure the height and width of the center panel and place pins at the intersecting center point. Check to see if the bag has a pocket—you don’t want to stitch through a pocket. This bag has a pocket only on one side, so the opposite side was chosen for stitching.

    Step 3:
Because of the bulkiness of the bag, it was not able to be placed within a hoop. A large hoop had to be used and this project was done on a multi-needle home machine with an arm. If you don’t have a machine like that, you may have to open a seam or two and re-stitch it after the embroidery is done. The adhesive stabilizer was not wide enough for the hoop, so one layer of regular tearaway was placed in the hoop and then a layer of the adhesive tearaway on top and both hooped together. Score the protective paper around the inside of the hoop with the tip of a pin, and then score an “x” in the middle. Use the tip of the pin to carefully lift up a section of the protective paper and rip it against the hoop. Repeat for the remaining sections.

    Step 4:
Place the hoop on the machine and find the center of the hoop. Place the bag under the needle and align the crossed pins under the needle; press the bag to the adhesive. For this machine, I was able to place electrical clamps on this machine to further hold the bag in place.

    Step 5:
This bag has rope handles, and they were positioned to the back, well out of the way of the stitching area. The machine was also slowed down because of the bulkiness of the bag.

    Step 6:
Stitch the bag following the color sequence. When the design has finished stitching, the hoop was removed from the hoop and the bag literally lifted off the stabilizer.

    Step 7:
This bag has some foam stabilizer in it and the clips left a little mark. To remove them, the iron was held above the bag and steam generated to remove the marks.

    Step 8:
Congratulations on creating a new bag—now head to the beach for some summer fun.
