Description

Instead of ditching your old lamp for a new one, try this tutorial to upcycle your lampshade. Take your lamp from trash to treasure with stylish fabric, beautiful embroidery, and a new coat of paint.

1 yard of Cotton or Linen Fabric (Length depends on the size of your lampshade)

5x7 Hoop

Embroidery Thread

Cut Away Stabilizer

Painter’s Tape

Spray Paint

Spray Adhesive for Fabric

Fabric Glue

Measuring Tape or Ruler

Step 1:

Gather Your Supplies

Step 2:

Measure Your Fabric to Fit Your Lamp
Wrap your fabric around the lampshade and mark it to decide your length. At this time also measure the height of your lampshade. Add 3 extra inches to your length and 2 inches to the width. This extra fabric is a safe guard to ensure your fabric wraps all the way around.

Step 3:

Prepare Your Embroidery
Reference the final design size to decide your placement. Then, mark the center of your design to align your hoop accurately. Cut a piece of stabilizer larger than your hoop and lay underneath your fabric. Hoop everything together.

Step 4:

You’re Ready to Embroider
After you stitch out your first design, repeat step 2 for the remaining design. Trim stabilizer from the finished embroidered designs.

Step 5:

Adhere the Fabric to Your Lampshade

Lay your lampshade on the table and spray a 4in section of fabric adhesive directly onto the shade. The seam of the lampshade is going to be back of the lamp, so that is a good place to start.
Take the end of your embroidered fabric and start laying it on the sprayed section of the lampshade.
Gradually keep spraying and laying the fabric, while rolling the shade. Be sure to smooth out the fabric along with every section you lay.

Step 6:

Finish the Raw Edge
When you have wrapped the entire lampshade, cut any extra fabric leaving a 1in overlap. Fold this section under ½ in to create a clean edge. Glue down to secure.

Step 7:

Finish the Top and Bottom
At this point, trim the fabric at the top and bottom of your lampshade down to ¾ in. Fold fabric over the edges of the lampshade and glue to the inside.

Step 8:

Revamp Your Lamp Base

Clean the base of the lamp to remove any dust or marks.
Tape the power cord and other areas of the lamp that you do not want to get paint on.
Spray paint the lamp base with two coats.
Remove tape

Step 9:

Attach Embroidered Lampshade

Voila!
