    Preface:
Make walking in a winter wonderland a little warmer with a homemade hat. Soft fleece paired with seasonal designs make great gifts-- but we won’t blame you if you keep them for yourself! An easy way to know what size to make is to measure the circumference of your head. For a list of standard measurements, see our size chart.

    How to Make Your Pattern:

    Step 1:
The circumference measurement will be the width of your hat. Add 1 inch to the side seam for seam allowance. The crown measurement will be the length of your hat. Draw on a piece of pattern paper a rectangle that corresponds with your measurements. Then, place width of the pattern piece along the stretchy side of fabric. Cut 1.

    Step 2:
Fold in half (width-wise) and pin the sides together. This will be your side seam of your hat. Sew at ½ in seam.

    Step 3:
After you sew the side seam, you will trim the excess fabric to reduce bulk. Save for later.

    Step 4:
Take 2 inches from one of the ends and fold it over. This will become the band. Pin in place and sew the band. Trim closely to the sewn edge.

    Step 5:
Lay the hat down with the seam in the middle of the hat. Take a ruler and mark a line 3 1/2 to 4 in away from the unfinished edge. This will be your line for the length of fringe.

    Step 6:
Cut your fridge every ½ in.

    Step 7:
Now you are ready to gather the fringe and tie. Turn the hat right side out and gather the fringe.Take the excess fabric you saved from the seam, wrap it around twice, and knot it twice. Make sure that you do the knotting by the seam where it will not be noticeable.

    Step 8:
Embroidery with a whimsical winter design and you'll look cool all winter long.
