Final Product: What You Will Create

    Preface:
Before doing this project, make sure you have a hoop large enough for the embroidery design. This project is easy to do. The mat is created doing the sew and flip method onto quilt batting, a backing and binding applied, and then a rope-like trim added.

    Step 1:
Gather the materials and read through the instructions before beginning. Print out a paper template of the design and color sequence. Note: be sure you have a hoop large enough to accommodate the embroidery design. 1/4" seam allowances are used throughout the project.

    Step 2:
Press the fabrics well using spray starch or sizing; quarter fold the white fabric for the embroidery and lightly crease. Cut out the design from the paper template. Center the template over the creased fabric, matching the crosshairs on the template to the fold lines on the fabric. Hoop the fabric with tearaway stabilizer.

    Step 3:
Load the design on the machine and place the hoop on the machine. Center the design under the needle. Stitch the design following the color sequence. Remove the excess stabilizer.

    Step 4:
Next will be to assemble the mat. Cut the center fabric to 15 ½” h x 13” w and cut the two side pieces 15 1/2 ” h x 11” w. Lay the batting on a flat surface. Place the embroidered fabric in the center of the batting and the two printed pieces on each side of the center piece. With right sides together, flip the right panel piece over the embroidered piece, matching right cut edges and pin all the layers together; repeat for the other panel piece.

    Step 5:
With the sewing thread stitch the side panels to the center panel along each long edge through the batting using a ¼” seam allowance. Carefully press the panels away from the center piece and pin all the cut edges to the batting. Baste along all the edges through both layers.

    Step 6:
Trim the excess batting even with the cut edges of the fabric. Spray the back of the batting with temporary spray adhesive and smooth the backing fabric over the batting. Baste the backing to the mat top.

    Step 7:
Trim the backing even with the cut edges of the other fabrics. Measure and cut two lengths of rope trim about 2” longer than the seams along the center/side panels. At the machine, use a zig-zag stitch with a wide width and longer length (test on scraps first) to stitch the trim over the seam lines. Do not stretch the trim while sewing.

    Step 8:
Measure all around the mat. Cut binding strips 2 ¼” wide and the length needed to go around the mat, plus about 10”. Join the binding strips and press the cut edges together. Sew the binding to the mat from the back, mitering the corners and using a ¼” seam.

    Step 9:
Turn the binding to the front and stitch in place, leaving an opening about 1” under which the ends of the rope trim can be tucked. Tuck one end of the rope trim into the open portion of the binding, pin the trim all around and stitch in place using an open toe or machine piping foot and a zig-zag stitch.

    Step 10:
When approaching the start point, cut the trim longer than needed and then tuck the end into the open area of the binding. Continue stitching the trim in place over the binding stitching line.

    Step 11:
Press the mat; add quilting in the print panels if desired. Gather the ingredients for the recipe and bake the cake.
