Final Product: What You Will Create

Preface:

From normal wear, table tops often become scratched and dinged. A simple, yet elegant, table mat can be created from a single layer of linen cross stitched in the corners and then the edges fringed. Use a medium to heavy weight linen.

Step 1:

Gather the materials and read through the instructions before beginning. Print out a paper template (after step 2) of the design and color sequence.

Step 2:

To aid in design placement, open up the embroidery editing software and move the alignment (center) point to the lower left hand corner of the design. This will be the new alignment point at the machine; save the file for stitching.

Step 3:

Measure the table dimension. Pull threads in the linen fabric to cut the fabric to size and press the cut fabric well using spray starch or sizing. Create guidelines for template placement and as a securing stitch for the fraying of the linen as the last step. Using a short 2.0mm stitch length, stitch around all four sides ½” (or more if desired) from the cut edge.

Step 4:

Generally cut around the paper design template. Now, using a ruler, align the ruler to a grid and draw a line 1/8” from the crosshair lines. Cut out along the lines. Align the cut edges of the template to the stitching lines at a corner of the linen and pin the template in place. To easily align the corners in the hoop, hoop a piece of tearaway stabilizer. Align the hooped stabilizer to a gridded mat and draw lines to align the corner of the fabric - be sure the design will still remain within the sewing field; a larger hoop may need to be used depending on the machine hoop sizes.

Step 5:

Now spray the stabilizer with temporary embroidery spray adhesive and align the cut edges of the fabric in place as planned. Rip pieces of painters tape and use them to additionally secure the edges of the linen to the stabilizer. Load the design on the machine and place the hooped fabric on the machine.

Step 6:

Align the needle to the alignment point on the paper template. Remove the template and stitch the design following the color sequence. After the design has finished stitching carefully remove the painters tape.

Step 7:

Remove the fabric from the hoop and remove the excess stabilizer. Repeat the steps of alignment, hooping, and stitching to complete the other three corners. Once all the stitching is done, remove the yarns in the fabric up to the half-inch stitching line to create a fringe around the entire table linen. Press the fabric well.

Step 8:

Congratulations on completing the Cross Stitched Linen Table Mat.
