Final Product: What You Will Create

    Preface:
The steps to creating this project are easy. Dismantling and cutting apart the tape measure require a screw driver or other tools. Use the tape measure to create other “snap” bags which have many uses.

    Step 1:
Gather the materials and read through the instructions before beginning. Print out a paper template of the design. Once the metal tape measure is cut, if it is left in the original holder, it will snap back and you won’t be able to get it out. The metal tape measure I use for snap bag projects was taken apart with a screw driver and then I wrap painter’s tape around the roll to keep the tape measure contained. Use very old scissors for cutting the tape measure. ¼” seam allowances are used for sewing the sides and bottom of the bag.

    Step 2:
Begin by folding the piece of faux suede in half and lightly creasing what will be the cutting line. Taking into consideration ¼” seam allowances on the sides and bottom, cut out and center the paper template on the front of the piece; pin in place. Hoop one piece of tearaway stabilizer and spray with basting spray.

    Step 3:
Center the design/fabric in the hoop for embroidery. Load the design on the machine and align the needle to the center of the paper template. Remove the template and stitch the design.

    Step 4:
After the design has been stitched, remove the fabric from the hoop and remove the excess stabilizer. Use the width of the tape measure (they are different widths) to determine how wide to cut the casing piece of fabric. Be sure to include seam allowances and about 3/16” to allow the tape measure to easily slide into the casing. Measure and cut another piece of faux suede using the measurements you figured for the casing. Place the wrong side of the casing to the wrong side of the embroidered suede and stitch in place.

    Step 5:
Fold the fabric in half to determine how long the sections of tape measure need to be. Cut two lengths of tape measure, rounding the ends. Cut the bag in half lengthwise along the fold line and be sure the lengths of tape measure have rounded ends and will fit within each casing side, minus the ¼” seam allowances. Two sections of tape measure go into each casing.

    Step 6:
Sew one side seam. Insert the tape measure sections with the “rounded” side of the tape measure to the inside as shown. Insert two sections into each casing, snugging the end of the tape measure to the seam and make sure there is more than a ¼” remaining past the other end of the tape measure sections for stitching the remaining side seam.

    Step 7:
Carefully sew the second side seam - be sure the needle will not hit the tape measure. Sew the bottom seam and then turn the bag right side out, forming the corners well, and flipping the casing up.

    Step 8:
To open the bag, simply pinch the side seam together and the bag top “snaps” open! Insert the guitar picks.

Congratulations on creating the “Guitar Pick Snap Bag”!
