Final Product: What You Will Create

    Preface:
This project presumes you know how to do “quilt-as-you-go” projects. The embroidery is done and centered on a backing and batting fleece and then strips of fabric are added and sewn on to frame the embroidery and create the fishing sit-upon. Binding sewn on and then pieces of vinyl are cut to place on the ground underneath the sit-upon protect it from soil when sitting on the bank of a creek fishing.

    Step 1:
Gather the materials and read through the instructions before beginning. Print out a paper template of the design and color sequence. The backing, batting and white fabric are cut larger than needed and then cut to fit.

    Step 2:
Begin by cutting the white cotton fabric for hooping. I cut the piece for the project 14” square. Quarter fold the fabric and lightly crease to create guide lines.

    Step 3:
Cut out the template of the embroidery design and center it in the fabric. Hoop the fabric with a piece of poly mesh stabilizer. Load the embroidery design on the machine and center the needle to the center of the template. Remove the paper template and stitch the design following the color sequence with the chosen embroidery thread colors.

    Step 4:
Using a gridded ruler and the creased guide lines, mark and cut the embroidered fabric so it is a 10” square on point.

    Step 5:
Press the fishing themed fabric well and cut a rectangle 18” high and 24” wide for the sit-upon back. Also cut a piece of fleece batting ½” larger on each side (19” x 25”).

    Step 6:
Quarter fold both the batting and then center it over the wrong side of the back piece. Using the creases on the batting, center and align the points of the embroidered piece to the fold lines and pin the embroidered fabric in place in the center of the sit-upon (pin through all three layers: back, batting and embroidered fabric).

    Step 7:
From the remaining fishing themed fabric, cut four strips 14” x 1.5”. Lay them into position as shown. Use the “quilt-as-you-go” technique to place the strips around the embroidered piece, right sides together and stitch them on using a ¼” seam allowance.

    Step 8:
Start with the upper right strip, sew that on, flip it up and pin it into position. Add the next strip, cutting off the excess.

    Step 9:
Repeat until all four sides are sewn on and flipped up into place.

    Step 10:
Using one of the fat quarter prints, cut four strips 2.5” x 18”. Beginning in the upper right hand corner, sew these strips on through all the layers like before.

    Step 11:
From the remaining fishing themed fabric, cut four strips 2.75” x 18”. Position them and sew them on, repeating the stich and flip “quilt-as-you-go” method through all the layers. Now from the remaining fat quarter print cut four strips of 6” x 18”. Place them into position along the corners and sew them on using the same quilting method. Flip them over the corners and pin the fabric along the edges of the sit-upon.

    Step 12:
From the wrong side, stitch a scant ¼” from the edges of the backing fabric. Trim the excess batting and top fabric even with the backing fabric.
