Materials
  • Flour sack or other towel
  • Embroidery thread as stated in design sequence
  • 1 piece of tearaway stabilizer
  • 1 loaf of homemade bread
  • 1 mini-loaf pan used to bake bread
  • 1 homemade jar of jelly
  • Tissue paper to fill basket
  • Small basket to hold items

  • Designs used in this project

Final Product: What You Will Create

    Preface:
Do you know someone moving to a new home or someone who needs cheering up? Bake some fresh bread wrapped in an embroidered towel, add the pan used for baking, a jar of homemade jelly and present the gift in a simple basket for an unforgettable gift.

    Step 1:
Gather the materials and read through the instructions before beginning. The time stated does not include time for baking and cooling the bread. Flour sack towels are perfect for this type of project because they are light weight, cotton, and breathable for home baked goods.

    Step 2:
Wash the towel and dry. If using a flour sack towel, do not press or the character of the towel will flatten. Quarter fold the towel to find the center of the towel for embroidery (or place the design where desired). Place pins to mark the center.

    Step 3:
Hoop the towel with one layer of tearaway stabilizer, centering the pins in the hoop. Load the embroidery design “Fresh Bread” on the machine and align the needle to the center point of the towel.

    Step 4:
Before starting the machine, be sure all corners of the towel are not caught under the hoop area - or it will be caught in the stitching. If this happens, just stop the machine, remove the hoop, and carefully remove the offending stitches. Place the hoop back on the machine, double check all areas of the fabric, and then start the machine stitching.

    Step 5:
Stitch the design following the color sequence. When the design finishes stitching remove the hoop from the machine and trim any jump stitches.

    Step 6:
Remove the fabric from the hoop and carefully remove the excess stabilizer from the back of the design. If there are any minor hoop marks simply steam them out with the iron.

    Step 7:
After the bread has cooled, wrap the bread in parchment or waxed paper. Test several folding techniques to wrap the bread so that the embroidery will be at the top center of the bread when wrapped.

    Step 8:
Place sheets of tissue in the basket and place the embroidered towel with the bread, the baking pan and a homemade jelly in the basket and give as a thoughtful gift.
