Materials
  • 1 layer tearaway stabilizer to fit hoop
  • Iron-on patch (Bondex brand was used for the project)
  • Embroidery thread as stated in design sequence
  • Sewing thread to match patch color
  • Something to put the patch on (shirt was used for the project)

  • Designs used in this project

Final Product: What You Will Create

    Preface:
We often have things that could benefit from a patch. Whether adding a decorative touch or covering a hole in a pair of blue jeans, this technique can be used for most anything and with most any design. Try this project to get the steps down and then plan other embroidered patches to adorn other pieces of clothing to extend their wear.

    Step 1:
Gather the materials and read through the instructions before beginning. Because all adhesive is different on different patch materials, be sure to test to make sure the adhesive won’t gum up the needle of the sewing machine causing broken and skipped stitches. This particular patching material caused no problem while stitching.

    Step 2:
Hoop the layer of tearaway stabilizer and then center the patch in the hoop. Notice that the shiny side is the side with the iron-on adhesive and the dull side is the right side of the patch. Place the shiny side down in the hoop.

    Step 3:
Using a small iron that will fit in the hoop, carefully melt the area of the adhesive that will be where the stitching occurs. Heat it only a little to help melt the adhesive and allow the adhesive to stick to the stabilizer. Do not do the whole patch area - only the portion to be embroidered. Load the design “Patriotic Ribbon” on the machine and stitch following the color sequence.

    Step 4:
Stop after each color or if there is a thread break to see if there is any adhesive gumming up the needle. If there is, take a small swab with alcohol and gently and carefully wipe down the needle. In stitching this patch there was no gumming up of the needle. Continue stitching the design.

    Step 5:
After the design has finished stitching, remove the patch from the hoop and remove the excess stabilizer.

    Step 6:
Next, determine how large you would like the finished size of the patch to be. Mark and cut the patch to the finished size, rounding the corners for better adhesion.

    Step 7:
Read the instructions for the patch material. Press the garment well.

    Step 8:
For this garment the patch will be placed on the left sleeve. The sleeve was pressed and creased down the center for easy alignment. If you have one, a sleeve board is a handy to use for the next step.

    Step 9:
Fold the patch in half to determine the center and place pins. Align the pins to the crease in the desired position. Double check the placement and then press the patch to the garment following the instructions for the patch material. Do not press on the embroidery or it will flatten the stitches. Press all the areas of the patch material using a press cloth if necessary.

    Step 10:
Allow the patch to cool and then check to see that all the edges are secured to the fabric. Using thread that matches the patch color, stitch the patch to the fabric using either or a straight or decorative stitch.

    Step 11:
    The patch has been finished.

    Step 12:
This shirt will be worn for Memorial Day and also for July 4th. Now that you know the technique, try different patch colors and designs and creative uses for embroidered patches.
