Final Product: What You Will Create

    Preface:
It is always fun to create seasonal projects for home décor, and St. Patrick’s Day is a favored holiday among many. Dress up a table with a simple table mat that includes an embroidery design in the center and is quilted in the hoop. Add some artificial flowers with a ribbon bow and you’ll have a fun table mat to add some cheer for the holiday.

    Step 1:
Gather the materials and read through the instructions before beginning. Print out paper templates of the embroidery designs. Note: All seam allowances are ¼”.

    Step 2:
Press all the squares of fabric well with spray starch. Hoop the fabric for the center embroidery design with stabilizer. Load the design “Lucky Charm” on the machine.

    Step 3:
Stitch the embroidery design following the color sequence. For the project, the center text was stitched with gold metallic thread.

    Step 4:
After the design has finished stitching, remove the fabric from the hoop and trim the excess stabilizer.

    Step 5:
Trim the center embroidery square to 6.5” x 6.5”. Arrange the layout for the table mat, alternating squares as shown.

    Step 6:
Begin sewing the squares together. Lay the squares in the left most column over the squares in the center column, right sides together. Sew each square set together using a ¼” seam allowance. Press the seams toward the green square.

    Step 7:
Next, lay the squares in the right column over the center column squares and sew them together, pressing the seams toward the green fabric.

    Step 8:
Now flip the top row over the middle row and sew them together, carefully matching seams. Press the seam away from the center.

    Step 9:
Lastly, flip the bottom row over the center row, and sew those together and press the seam away from the center. The top is complete.

    Step 10:
The back of the top will look like this.

    Step 11:
Center the top over the batting and pin them together. Cut the batting 1 ¼” away from the outer most edges of each side of the quilt top.

    Step 12:
Place the backing fabric wrong side up on a table. Lay the quilt top and batting over the backing fabric. Trim the backing fabric 2 ½” away from the quilt top (do not use the batting to measure as it can stretch slightly giving an inaccurate measurement.) Trim each side the same amount.

    Step 13:
Remove the top and quilt and set aside. Turn under ¼” on all sides of the backing fabric. Measure 1 ¼” away from the folded edge and mark a line for folding; press each side along the fold line.

    Step 14:
Next will be to miter the corners. Place pins in the top and side of where the inside corners of the folded edges meet.

    Step 15:
Open up the fabric, keeping the ¼” edge folded under. Bring the right sides of the adjoining sides together and match the pins.

    Step 16:
Sew a line from the pin to the corner point.

    Step 17:
Trim the corner leaving about a ¼” seam and press it open.

    Step 18:
Repeat mitering the remaining three corners. Turn the corners right side out and press well. Insert the pinned top and batting under the folded edges, centering the top to the backing. The folded border edge should be ¼” from the cut edge of the top.

    Step 19:
Pin all the layers together at the edge of the border. Audition the thread colors in the embroidery design and chose one to be used for sewing down the border and quilting all the layers together.

    Step 20:
Edge stitch along the inside border to secure all the layers together.

    Step 21:
Find the center of each quilt square. The easiest way to do this is to lay a ruler from corner to corner and use a Hera Marker to draw along the edge of the ruler through the center area of the square.

    Step 22:
Load the “Shamrocks Quilting” design on the machine. Hoop the first square (no additional stabilizer is needed). You can see in the photo to the right how the Hera Marker leaves creases in the fabric but there are no marks to remove after the quilting is done. Align the needle to the center mark on the square.

    Step 23:
Quilt the design. (DO NOT leave the machine while the quilting is being done. There are several layers and should the hoop pop, you want to be right there to stop the machine.) Quilt all the white squares, except the middle embroidered square.

    Step 24:
Quilt all the green squares. Do any additional quilting along the borders or center if desired.

    Step 25:
Arrange the flowers in the pot and add the ribbon bow. Enjoy your new Lucky Charm Table Mat for St. Patrick’s Day.
