The amount of lace trims to purchase depends upon the size of the pillowcases being decorated. Measure the width of each pillowcase and purchase that amount of trim. Alter the colors in the embroidery design if matching décor colors is desired. The design used in this project is large so be sure there is a hoop for the machine that will accommodate the size of the design.
Step 1:
Gather the materials and read through the instructions before beginning. Print out a paper template of the design. Begin with one pillowcase and then repeat all the steps for the second pillowcase.

Step 2:
Press the pillowcase well. Remove the stitching on each side of the pillowcase enough to open it up flat for embroidery and adding the lace trims. If one side has a fold, simply cut along the fold line.

Step 3:
Press the pillowcase front in half lengthwise.

Step 4:
Cut out around the design on the paper template and center it along the pressed crease, placing it above the pillowcase hem the amount desired. Audition the lace trim and beading. If the lace trim is flat, it may be left that way and sewn on, or it may be gathered; the choice is yours. The beading will be placed over the lace edging after it is basted on.

Step 5:
Hoop the fabric with one layer of tearaway stabilizer. Note: for the sample project, the excess fabric needed to be kept toward the front of the machine so the design was rotated 180 degrees and the fabric hooped upside down.

Step 6:
Load the “Floral Design” on the machine and stitch the design following the color sequence.

Step 7:
After the design finishes stitching, remove the fabric from the hoop and remove the excess stabilizer.

Step 8:
The next step is to gather the lace. Use a ruffling foot or run a row of basting thread along the straight edge of the lace. Pin the lace in place over the stitching for the hem on the pillowcase.

Step 9:

Step 11:
Now it is time to resew the sides of the pillowcase. Place the right sides of the pillowcase together, matching the bottom fold of the hem edge. Sew the pillowcase side seam on the serger or sew it on the regular sewing machine and finish the edge with a zig-zag stitch.

Step 13:
Repeat all the steps for the second pillow case and then insert the pillows into the pillowcase. These pillowcases make a lovely Mother’s Day gift.
