Final Product: What You Will Create

    Preface:
This project would be fun to do with older children. The “chicks” portion of the embroidery design may be done on balsa wood, or the entire design done on a piece of felt, omitting the balsa wood from the project completely. All supplies may be purchased at a hobby store such as Michael’s or Hobby Lobby.

    Step 1:
Read through all the instructions before beginning and then gather the materials. There is an option to do the embroidery on balsa wood or felt. For the project, the chicks were embroidered on balsa wood and then the words in the design enlarged and stitched on felt. The lettering is much too small to stitch on the balsa wood. While the design is stitching, heat up the glue gun so it is ready to go. If children are helping to do this project, a low-temp or cool temp glue gun should be used and with adult supervision only. Be sure to read and follow all manufacturers’ directions concerning the hot glue and gun. Print out the paper template for the design.

    Step 2:
Cut out the design from the paper template and center it on the balsa wood.

    Step 3:
If needed cut the wood to fit within the hoop area. Center the wood squarely in the hoop and use temporary embroidery spray adhesive to hold it in place to the stabilizer.

    Step 4:
Load the design “Chillin’ with Peeps” on the machine and align the needle to the center of the paper template.

    Step 5:
Remove the paper template, slow the machine down, and stitch the chicks portion of the design.

    Step 6:
After the design has stitched, trim away the excess stabilizer from the back of the balsa wood.

    Step 7:
The text in the design is much too small to stitch on balsa wood. So, a piece of felt was hooped with tearaway stabilizer. The design was loaded again and this time enlarged 35%. The machine was advanced through to the last color to stitch the lettering only. If you wish, omit the steps of stitching on the balsa wood and stitch the entire design on the felt.

    Step 8:
Trim the balsa wood leaving a good amount around the chicks as shown. Leave the text in the hoop to complete the next step.

    Step 9:
Spread hot glue on the back of the balsa wood and place the balsa wood above the text on the felt, centering the chicks to the text.

    Step 10:
After the glue has cooled, remove the fabric from the hoop. Trim the felt in a scalloped design around the embroidery as shown.

    Step 11:
For the cover of the egg carton, use the glue gun to spread glue in small sections, doing half of the lid at a time.

    Step 12:
Spread and press the basket grass to the lid and repeat for the other side of the lid. Spread a small amount of hot glue along the upper edge of the lid and press the felt to the glue; let cool.

    Step 13:
Spread glue in a few sections of the egg carton and press a small amount of basket grass into the glue to create “nests”.

    Step 14:
In the empty sections, place hot glue on the bottom of a plastic egg and place the egg in the carton.
