Materials
  • A wooden rack (available at a craft/hobby store such as Hobby Lobby or Michael’s)
  • 1- 6” x 6” square of ivory nylon organza
  • Water soluble stabilizer
  • Embroidery thread (black was used in the project)
  • Rubber cement
  • Embroidery digitizing software

  • Designs used in this project

    Preface:
This project is simple to do yet makes a wonderful and useful gift for the hunter or wildlife lover in your family. Though the design is not meant to be free-standing, by the addition of a single outline stitch, the design can be turned into a free-standing applique to be applied to the wooden rack with rubber cement.

    Step 1:
Read through the instructions before beginning. Gather the supplies and print out a template of the design (after the stitching line has been added to the design in Step 2).

    Step 2:
This design is not meant to be free-standing; however, it can be made into a free-standing applique design with the addition of a tack down line in software. Use the tool in your software to create a single outline just inside the outer edge of the design and then sequence the line to stitch first.

    Step 3:
Cut out the template of the design and generally plan the placement as desired on the wooden rack. If desired, finish the rack with paint or stain, or sealing; the one used in the sample was left just as is. Remember that the nylon organza is translucent so any color may show through the fabric in the end.

    Step 4:
Cut one piece of nylon organza larger than the template.

    Step 5:
Load the design “Hunting Scene” on the machine. Use the smallest hoop available for the design, turning the design for stitching if needed. Hoop water soluble stabilizer in the hoop and place the hoop on the machine. Place the nylon organza on top of the stabilizer. Stitch color 1, the outline stitch.

    Step 6:
Remove the hoop from the machine and trim the fabric away from outside the stitching line.

    Step 7:
Place the hoop back on the machine and stitch the embroidery design. The outer edge of the fabric will be encased under the stitches of the design.

    Step 8:
After the design finishes stitching, remove it from the hoop and very carefully cut away the stabilizer close to the outer edge of the design, leaving about 1/8”. There really is no need to wash away the stabilizer except around the very edges. Use a sponge dampened in water and run the sponge along the outer edge to dissolve the 1/8” back to the stitching line.

    Step 9:
Brush rubber cement on the back side of the embroidered fabric and position and press the embroidery in place as planned on the rack.

    Step 10:
Place a ruler and weight or book on top of the glued design to keep it flat until the glue dries.

    Step 11:
Hang the rack up for hats and keys for your special family member to keep everything organized for trips into the woods.
