Final Product: What You Will Create

Preface:

This project can be created in any size to fit a dog’s collar. No specific dimensions will be given because all collar sizes differ. Instructions will be shown how to measure and create the kerchief which will slip easily over the collar for a nice accent for a dog’s neck. Determine the width and length needed, add ¼” seam allowances and a top casing then purchase the fabric amount needed.

Step 1:

Gather the materials and read through the instructions before beginning. This project begins with a dog collar and measurements are determined from the collar size and width. Print a paper template of the embroidery design.

Step 2:

Press the fabric well with spray starch. Work with fabric that has been folded double, laying the fold at the top of the ironing board. Place the opened collar down from the fold the width of the collar plus about ½”. Determine the width of fabric needed to go the length of the collar.

Step 3:

Grab the folded edge and bring it over the collar and temporarily pin it in place all across the fabric forming a casing. Be sure the fold is even all the way across and that the collar will slide easily in and out through this casing.

Step 4:

Remove the collar and press in a crease. Unpin and measure the depth of the casing.

Step 5:

Now fold the fabric in half lengthwise. Draw from the bottom of the casing to a point the length of the center of the collar as you determine.

Step 6:

Cut out the fabric along the drawn line. Fold down the casing and cut to meet the edges. To find the center point of the fabric to align the embroidery design, fold the point of the fabric up to the bottom of the casing, less ¼” (seam allowance); crease lightly. Fold the fabric in half from the casing to the point and crease lightly.

Step 7:

Cut out the design from the template and center over the creases. Make any adjustments to move the design up or down to fit the area as you’d like. Hoop the top layer of fabric with one layer of tearaway stabilizer.

Step 8:

Load the “Wolf and Paw Print” design under the needle of the machine and stitch the design following the color sequence. Add the dog’s name or initials if desired.

Step 9:

Optional: Use a French curve to curve the bottom edge of the kerchief and cut along this line smoothing the line to the side edges.

Step 10:

Place right sides together and pin the cut edges together.

Step 11:

Begin at the top fold, stitch all the way around the cut edges using a ¼” seam allowance. Trim the corners of the casing to eliminate bulk.

Step 12:

Separate the layers of the fabric and carefully create a slit in the upper casing through which to turn the kerchief to the right side.

Step 13:

Carefully form the seams and then press the kerchief. Cut a small piece of fusible web. Place the fusible web underneath the slit and press the slit melting the fusible web to close the slit.

Step 14:

On the back side of the kerchief, measure and fold the casing down as originally measured in Step 4; press well.

Step 15:

At the sewing machine, edge stitch the casing along the lower folded edge. Slide the collar through the casing.

Step 16:

Place the collar around the dog’s neck. Congratulations on creating a “Wolf Dog Collar Kerchief”.
