Materials
  • Nylon organza and/or nylon bridal tulle (amount will depend upon the number of snowflakes being stitched)
  • White polyester embroidery thread (must be poly)
  • Wood burning iron
  • Rubber cement

  • Designs used in this project

    Preface:
The FSL Fancy Lace embroidery design pack contains 10 designs; all the designs were used for the project. Though the designs say FSL, for the project the designs were stitched with one layer of a fiber mesh water soluble stabilizer on either one layer of nylon organza or two layers of bridal tulle. These stitch fast because they are one color. If the machine hoop permits, gang several up in one hoop but be sure to leave enough room between each design. For this project, the material must be nylon and the thread must be polyester. After the stitching is done the fabric is cut close to the stitching and the rest melted away with the wood burning tool. Nylon melts without browned edges and will melt up to the polyester thread (rayon thread would cause browned edges). Do test the rubber cement in an inconspicuous spot on the window before applying the ornaments to the window.

    Step 1:
Gather the materials and read through the instructions before beginning. Be sure that you’ve read the preface for material requirements. Print paper templates of each ornament to aid in design placement in the hoop.

    Step 2:
Depending on the hoop size, several ornaments may be stitched in the hoop (Option: the setup for the design could be done in software). Cut out around the design of each template. Position the templates in the hoop as they will be stitched. Be sure to leave at least ½” between ornaments. Hoop one layer of fiber type water soluble stabilizer with either one layer of nylon organza or two layers of nylon bridal tulle.

    Step 3:
Stitch the designs as placed in the hoop. Remove the fabric from the hoop and trim the extra fabric leaving about ¼” all around each ornament design.

    Step 4:
Hoop more fabric with stabilizer and repeat the stitching process for as many designs as you’d like for your window display.

    Step 5:
After all the ornaments are stitched, follow the manufacturer’s directions for dissolving away the water soluble stabilizer. Lay the rinsed ornaments on a clean, dry towel. Place another clean, dry towel on top and blot the ornaments dry. Lay the ornaments out on a flat surface to dry completely.

    Step 6:
While the ornaments are drying, heat up the wood burning tool with the small pointed tip. Keep a damp towel handy to use to wipe the tip off often because the melted nylon will build up on the tip. Be sure to read and follow all the manufacturer’s directions for using the wood burning tool; it becomes very hot.

    Step 7:
When the ornaments have dried, very carefully touch the tip to the outside edge of the nylon fabric and move the tip along the fabric and the fabric will melt back to the thread. Work in small sections carefully around each ornament.

    Step 8:
You can see the nylon organza on the left and the two layers of tulle on the right give different looks to each ornament.

    Step 9:
Clean the window. Lightly brush rubber cement to the back of an ornament and press into position on the window. Repeat for the remaining ornaments. An option in place of glue is to use clear nylon fishing line to suspend the ornaments from the window frame.

    Step 10:
When it is time to remove them, they will peel right off the window. Any residual glue can be rubbed off the window with your finger and the window cleaned.

    Step 11:
Let the machine stitch away and create several ornaments for each of your windows to add a festive display for the winter months.
