Materials
  • Binder Pouch pencil case
  • Embroidery thread
  • Adhesive tearaway stabilizer
  • 8” x 11” piece of felt (or themed fabric)
  • Sewing thread to match pencil case color

  • Designs used in this project

Final Product: What You Will Create

    Preface:
Send a student back to school with a fun pencil case embroidered with the “Pencils, Crayons Markers” design. A layer of felt or themed fabric sewn into the pouch provides a secret area to tuck away a little cash for lunch.

    Step 1:
Gather the materials and read through the instructions before beginning. The pouch used for the project has a clear vinyl window but any type of pencil pouch may be used. Print out a paper template of the design.

    Step 2:
The pouch needs to remain flat for embroidery. Remove any inserts and remove the stitches at the side seams. Make note of the order the pouch is sewn together. After the embroidery is completed the pouch will need to be sewn back together again.

    Step 3:
Remove the stitching from one side of the zipper to allow the fabric to lie flat. Fold the fabric side in half lengthwise and widthwise and finger press to find the center of the pouch.

    Step 4:
Cut out the design from the paper template and pin to the center cross mark just made. Hoop one layer of adhesive tearaway, paper side up.

    Step 5:
Determine how the pouch needs to be positioned in the hoop for stitching at the machine. Score the paper on the stabilizer with a pin and tear away the protective paper. Fold the pouch fabric in half and center it in the hoop over the stabilizer.

    Step 6:
Flip the fabric into position and use your fingers to press the pouch fabric onto the adhesive.

    Step 7:
Load the embroidery design “Pencils, Crayons Markers” onto the machine. Rotate the design, if necessary, for stitching.

    Step 8:
Place the hooped fabric on the machine and align the center of the design to the center of the paper template. Remove the paper template and stitch the design following the color sequence.

    Step 9:
After the design finishes stitching, clip any jump threads and carefully remove the design from the hoop and stabilizer.

    Step 10:
The design will be stitched on the back side of the vinyl pouch, but the wrong side of the design will show through the pouch. There are a couple of options. You may choose to stitch the design so the right side of the pencils shows through the vinyl pouch (the back side would be visible on the outside of the pouch) or you can add a layer of felt or themed fabric to cover the back side of the embroidery and provide a hidden area for a little lunch cash.

    Step 11:
If using themed fabric, use two layers folded wrong sides together and treated as a single layer or chose a piece of felt which was done for the sample project.

    Step 12:
Measure and cut the fabric or felt to the same size and the fabric excluding the zipper area; be sure to include seam allowances at the side seams.

    Step 13:
Place the zipper into position and pin in place. At the machine, sew the zipper back into place using the sewing thread.

    Step 14:
Fold the zipper area into position. Pin the felt (or fabric) against the clear vinyl side of the fabric. Place right sides of the pouch together and sew the side seams, catching the felt into the seam and sewing through the zipper ends as was originally done. Turn the pouch right side out. The felt is sandwiched inside the pouch.

    Step 15:
On the outside the stitching is visible and the felt provides a divider to tuck a little cash behind that will not be visible when the pouch is in use.
