Materials
  • Embroidery thread
  • Adhesive tearaway stabilizer
  • Water soluble topper
  • Stocking

  • Designs used in this project

    Preface:
This whimsical stocking stitches up quickly. Depending on placement and the hoop, seams may need to be removed and resewn after the embroidery finishes stitching. Use a water soluble topper to keep the stitches up on the fur.

    Step 1:
Gather the materials and read through the instructions before beginning. When purchasing the stocking, check the depth of the fur. Some is quite thick and others quite thin. Choose a stocking with a low to medium pile. Print a template of the design to aid in embroidery placement.

    Step 2:
Trim the paper template around the design. Determine which way the stocking needs to face and also where you’d like the design placement for stitching. If this is a gift, an option may be to embroider both sides so the design will be visible no matter which direction the stocking is hung. For this project, it was decided the design would be sewn on the cuff. The steps would be the same if the design were to be sewn on the body of the stocking.

    Step 3:
Pin the paper template into position. Determine how the stocking will be hooped. It may be necessary to remove stitches and open up seam allowances to gain full access and keep the fabric flat for stitching.

    Step 4:
To remove the stitches, slide the seam ripper under every second or third stitch and cut the thread. Remove as much stitching as needed to keep the fabric flat for embroidery.

    Step 5:
Hoop a piece of adhesive tearaway stabilizer. Score the protective paper and remove it from inside the hoop.

    Step 6:
Center and place the area of the fabric for embroidery squarely in the hoop. Press the back side of the fabric to the adhesive on the stabilizer.

    Step 7:
Load the “Definitely Naughty” embroidery design into the machine. Place the hooped fabric on the machine. Rotate the design so it will stitch in the correct direction.

    Step 8:
Center the needle to the middle of the template. Check to be sure none of the stocking is caught anywhere under the machine area and that the fabric to be stitched remains flat at all times. Remove the paper template and place a piece of water soluble topper down before beginning to stitch. At this point, if your machine has a baste feature, it may be used to secure the topper and fabric to the stabilizer to help secure everything for stitching.

    Step 9:
Stitch the design following the color sequence. When the stitching is completed, remove the hoop from the machine and remove the fabric from the hoop.

    Step 10:
Remove the excess tearaway stabilizer and steam away the water soluble topper (it just balls up and can be completely removed this way). Do not wet the topper or fur; it will probably become a globby mess. Another option is to just tear away all the excess water soluble with tweezers.

    Step 11:
Now it is time to resew any seams that were opened up. Pin together the seam allowances and stitch along the original stitching line.

    Step 12:
Congratulations on completing the “Definitively Naughty” stocking.
