Final Product: What You Will Create

    Preface:
This is such a fun project to do! Begin with a towel and end up with a clever basket made of nothing but towels. Choose the southwestern design as was done for this project, or choose a design that will coordinate with your bathroom accessories. This towel basket would make a great hostess gift or fill it with sample size toiletries and place it in a guest bath. Use children’s or neutral embroidery designs and this would make a great craft fair sale item!

    Step 1:
Gather the materials and read through the instructions before beginning. Print out a paper template of the design and color sequence. Do a test sewout of the design on a scrap piece of terrycloth; for the towel used in the project, underlay had to be added and the density set closer together so the terrycloth loops would not poke through the stitching. This can be done in embroidery software or even in some of the newer machines. The colors of the design can also be changed in software, or it can just be changed at the machine. Choose a ribbon color that coordinates with one of the embroidery thread colors.

    Step 2:
The first thing is to decide where the design should be placed on the basket. To do this, fold the bath towel into the basket shape. Fold the towel in half matching the hemmed edges. Then fold the top folded edge down 1/3 the length. Next, fold the hemmed edges up the remaining third so they meet the fold just created at the top.

    Step 3:
The towel will now be folded into thirds again. Fold the left side in 1/3 and then the right side on top of what was just folded to make sure the towel folds in thirds; lay the part just folded flat again. To create the basket shape, grab the two top layers of the left folded third which will create a little pocket. Tuck all layers of the right third into the pocket opening.

    Step 4:
Neatly secure the right third into the pocket. Be sure the edges go all the way to the bottom of the pocket and the towel area being inserted is flat; the inserted towel area should fit very snugly into the pocket area. Now stand the towel on end with the hemmed edges up and form the towel into a circle shape.

    Step 5:
Take the two hemmed edges closest to you and press them downward to form the basket floor. Now take the remaining two hemmed edges and press them down as well. Work to smooth the layers into a smooth basket floor.

    Step 6:
The bottom of the basket will look somewhat like this. If the edges aren’t tucked in smoothly at this point, it is ok - this basket folding is just to show you how the process is done and to get the basket shape for the ribbon and design placement. Stand the basket up on end again with the overlapping towel edges to the back. Cut out the paper template of the design and pin it in place where you’d like it on the front of the basket - generally pin the ribbon in place, too, to make sure the design is exactly where you’d like it. Now unfold the towel and the design template will be positioned for hooping and embroidery.

    Step 7:
Hoop the towel with the tearaway stabilizer. Load the design on the machine and align the design under the needle. Before pressing start, be sure there is no fabric under the hoop and the arm of the embroidery machine will move freely and no fabric will be caught under the arm while the machine stitches. Remove the paper template and place down a piece of water soluble stabilizer.

    Step 8:
Stitch the design following the color sequence. After the design is stitched, steam away the water soluble and remove the excess tearaway stabilizer.

    Step 9:
Now re-fold the towel as was originally done; be sure the basket bottom is smooth and secure. Accordion fold the washcloth and then fold it in half; set aside momentarily.

    Step 10:
Roll the hand towel tightly, lengthwise, into a sausage shape. Grab one end and hold it securely. Grab the other end and twist the towel just until it starts to double up on itself. Insert the twisted hand towel into the basket to act as the handle of the basket.

    Step 11:
Use the ribbon to tie a pretty bow as planned and insert the folded washcloth. Congratulations on creating a beautiful towel basket. To further personalize, add silk flowers, toiletries, or additional washcloths and towels rolled up.
