  • Light purple batik fabric fabric to fill out hoop, then cut down to size after embroidery

  • Optional: embroidery editing software to arrange and change colors on frogs

  • Designs used in this project

Final Product: What You Will Create

    Preface:
This project uses all three sizes of the same frog; because of the design characteristics, do not try and re-size the small frog up or a large frog down because misregistration of outlines will occur and the underlay is different. The frogs are brought into the software and arranged in a pleasing pattern and then the colors are changed in the software to coordinate with the bright colors in the fabric. The panel is embroidered, cut down to size, and then the pieces sewn together to complete the pillow.

    Step 1:
Gather the materials and read through the instructions before beginning. Print out a paper template of the designs and color sequence.

    Step 2:
Open the software and import all three of the frogs in the different sizes. Hold different colors of embroidery thread up to the fabric to decide which threads will be used for which frogs. For the project, the eyes and black outline remained the same; the body and spots were changed for each frog.

    Step 3:
If you have a large hoop, import the hoop outline onto the page, change the frog colors (be sure to keep the objects for each individual frog grouped) and then rotate and move them into a pleasing arrangement as you’d like. Remove the hoop outline and then save the file as a new design and save the design in the format needed for stitching.

    Step 4:
Hoop the batik fabric with stabilizer and load the design on the machine. Stitch the frogs following the color sequence.

    Step 5:
Remove the embroidery from the hoop and trim the fabric to size (11.5” high x 9.5” wide was used for the project).

    Step 6:
Cut the fabrics to size as shown.

    Step 7:
Flip the embroidered fabric on top of the right side of the colorful fabric, matching cut edges and pin them together. Sew them together using a ¼” seam. Press the seam toward the embroidered fabric.

    Step 8:
Place the remaining cut edges together, pin, and sew a ¼” seam and press. Now find the centers of the embroidered fabric and colorful fabric by bringing together and matching the seams. Place pins at the center marks.

    Step 9:
To sew the pillow, bring the top pins of the embroidered and colorful fabric together and pin the cut edges together; repeat for the bottom edges, placing double pins as show to leave the area open for turning the pillow and stuffing.

    Step 10:
Sew the seams using a ¼” seam. Turn the pillow through the opening.
