Final Product: What You Will Create

    Preface:
Recycled denim is used for these key fobs in order to obtain the frayed edges. They can be made in vinyl as well, but of course the edges with be smooth.

    Step 1:
Pumpkin (1078) thread was used for all the color stops (CS) in these key fobs as it was the color thread that best matched the long Kam Snaps®. Feel free to use what ever color thread best matches the color of the long Kam Snaps® that you have. As the stitches will show on the back of the key fobs, wind a bobbin with the same thread.

    Step 2:
Tautly hoop tear away stabilizer in your hoop. With matching thread in the top and bottom of your machine run CS 1 as a placement line.

    Step 3:
Select an appropriate size layer of denim per the materials list above and smooth it over the placement lines. Do not use adhesive spray on the denim, just lay it over the tear away. Run CS 2 to tack down the denim.

    Step 4:
Run CS 3 to embroider the details on the key fob. Note: RCDNK04 will have additional steps at this point to attach the applique explained below in Steps 7 through 9.

    Step 5:
Before you run the last CS in the design, remove the hoop from the machine, do not unhoop. Lay the hoop face down on a flat surface. Align the second corresponding rectangle of denim face up on the back of the hoop. Hold in place with embroidery tape.

    Step 6:
Return the hoop to the machine and run the final CS to stitch the outline of the key fob.

    Step 7:
For RCDNK04 there are two additional CSs to applique the fabric heart. For this design run the first two CSs as in Steps 2 and 3. Then run the CS 3 which is a placement line for the applique.

    Step 8:
Press your applique fabric 3 or 4 times with Magic Sizing or spray starch as this makes it easier to handle. Lay it over the placement line – you can use a little spray adhesive if you like to hold it in place. Run CS 4 to tack it down.

    Step 9:
Trim the applique right up next to the tack down lines. Run CS 5 to stitch the outline around the applique. Add back fabric and complete the key fob as in Steps 5 and 6.

    Step 10:
Remove the project from the hoop. Cut it out inside the original rectangular tack down lines.

    Step 11:
    Tear away the stabilizer.

    Step 12:
Trim the key fob about ¼” from the final stitching lines. Clip the seam allowance all the way around the key fob making the clips about ¼” apart.

    Step 13:
Lay the key fob on your cutting mat. Rub the vegetable brush in a circular motion around the edges to get them to fray.

    Step 14:
Fold the top hanger portion of the key fob in half to just where the back of the hanger meets the heart. Push the awl that comes with the Kam Snap® tool through all layers of the hanger. The picture shows the placement of the awl a little high, a problem caused by trying to hold the awl up and take a picture at the same time. The proper placement would be where the yellow dot is in the picture.

    Step 15:
Following the manufacturer’s instructions insert a snap in each hole punched in the hanger. Insert the hanger through the metal key swivel key fob holder and snap shut.

    Step 16:
Congratulations your ITH Denim Key Fob is complete! Make all four to attach to various keys, your purse and even to your sewing machine luggage for easy identification.
