Final Product: What You Will Create

    Preface:
The appliques for the blocks are designed for cutting with an electronic cutting machine, however the stitch and trim method can also be used. If you use the Scan N Cut, as I do, download the FCM files as they will allow you to move different appliques around on the separate fabrics that you scan into the Scan N Cut®. When you download your designs you will see your default embroidery format first, download that. Then click on “other formats” to be able to download the FCM or SVG files.

    Step 1:
Tautly hoop 2 ½ ounce stabilizer in your embroidery hoop. Each mug rug needs 1 9” x 7” front and back fabric as well as a piece of Battilizer® or low loft batting cut to the same size. For the appliques cut:
For SKMR01: Grey and Ivory fabric 3 ½” x 3 ½” and Heat N Bond Lite® the same size for each fabric.
    For SKMR02: Grey fabric 5 ½” x 4”; Ivory fabric 6” x 3 ¾” and Heat N Bond Lite® in corresponding sizes.
    For SKNR03: Grey fabric 4” x 5”; ivory fabric 4” x 4” and Heat N Bond Lite® in corresponding sizes.

    Step 2:
Press each applique piece 3 or 4 times with Magic Sizing® and iron on the Heat N Bond Lite®. Remove the paper from the back and place fabric side up on your cutting mat. Load the FCM file if using the Scan N Cut®. The FCM files have already been adjusted to create a perfect fit for the placement lines, do not enlarge. If you need help with the stitch and trim method see our article on Stitch and Trim Applique.

    Step 3:
Run the first color stop (CS) in a color to match your background fabric as a placement line for the fabric.

    Step 4:
Spray adhesive on the back of the background fabric and tack down with CS 2 using the same color thread.

    Step 5:
Run CS 3 as a placement line for the first applique. I used white for all of the color stops for placement lines and tack downs for all of the appliques.

    Step 6:
Remove the hoop from the machine, do not unhoop, position the applique then press in place with an applique iron. Note: On some of the more complex applique shapes it helps to spray a little adhesive on the back of the applique so that one part will stay in place while you align another section. Then press in place. Return the hoop to the machine and stitch the next CS as a tack down line.

    Step 7:
Repeat Steps 5 and 6 to place, press and tack down all the applique pieces.

    Step 8:
Follow the color chart to stitch all but the last 2 CSs to stitch the applique borders and details.

    Step 9:
Remove the hoop from the machine, do not unhoop, and place the hoop face down on a flat surface. Spray adhesive on the Battilizer® and position over the back hoop aligning with the front fabrics. Spray adhesive on the wrong side of the back fabric and align over the Battilizer®.

    Step 10:
Return the hoop to the machine. Run the next CS to tack down the back batting and fabric. Run the last color stop in the color desired to quilt the mug rug.
