ITH Poker Night Mug Rugs

  • For each mug rug:
  • 5” x 7” embroidery hoop
  • 2 9” x 7” rectangles White Kona® cloth
  • 1 9” x 7” rectangle of Battilizer® or low loft Batting
  • 1 2 ¼” x the width of the fabric of Red or Black Kona® cloth for binding
  • No show stabilizer cut to fit your hoop
  • Spray adhesive

    Final Product: What You Will Create

    The instructions are the same for each mug rug as outlined below, just change the thread color per the color charts for each one. See our article Binding Small Embroidery Projects for an easy method of binding these mug rugs.  

    Step 1:
    Cut your fabric and batting per the materials list. Tautly hoop the no show stabilizer and run color stop (CS) 1 in white as a placement line for the fabric.

    Step 2:
    Spray the back of a fabric rectangle with adhesive and smooth over the placement lines so that the fabric exceeds the placement lines by ½” on all sides. Run CS 2 in white or matching thread color to tack down the fabric.

    Step 3:
    Run CS 3 in the color listed on the color chart to embroider the design.

    Step 4:
    Remove the hoop from the machine, do not unhoop. Turn the hoop face down on a flat surface. Spray the Battilizer® with adhesive and place the Battilizer® over the placement lines on the back of the hoop having the batting extend beyond the placement lines by ½” on all sides.

    Step 5:
    Spray adhesive on the back of the second rectangle of fabric and place over and aligning with the Battilizer®.

    Step 6:
    Return the hoop to the machine. Run CS 4 in white or color to match your fabric if you used a different colored fabric to tack down the back fabrics. Run CS 5 in white, or the color of your choice to quilt the mug rug.

    Step 7:
    Lay the ¼” mark of a quilting ruler along the tack down lines of the mug rug. Trim the seam allowances to ¼” on all sides.

    Step 8:
    Cut a strip of red or black fabric 2 ¼” wide across the width of the fabric. Press in half lengthwise based upon your preferred method of binding. See the Binding Small Embroidery Projects article for an easy way to apply binding to this mug rug.
