  • For each Mug Mat:
  • 5” x 7” embroidery hoop
  • 2 9” x 7” rectangles of quilting cotton fabric
  • 1 9” x 7” rectangle of Battilizer® or low loft batting
  • 1 2.5” strip of Christmas print quilting cotton fabric for binding
  • Poly mesh stabilizer
  • Spray Adhesive

  • Designs used in this project

Final Product: What You Will Create

To make these mug mats a little larger they are cut with a ½” seam allowance after they are embroidered and quilted. The machine applied binding is made with a 2.5” strip to make sure that it covers the tack down stitches when it is stitched to the front of the mug mag. The mug mats each run in about ½ hour on your embroidery machine and it takes about ½ hour to apply the binding.

    Step 1:
Cut 2 9” x 7” rectangles of your background and back fabric and 1 9” x 7” rectangle of Battilizer® or low loft batting. Hoop the poly mesh stabilizer tautly in your hoop.

Run color stop (CS) 1 in a thread color that matches your fabric.

    Step 3:
Spray adhesive on the back of a fabric rectangle and position over the placement lines so that the fabric exceeds the placement lines by at least ½” on all sides. Run CS 2 in the matching thread to tack down the fabric.

    Step 4:

    Step 5:
Remove the hoop from the machine – do not unhoop. Lay the hoop face down on a flat surface.
Spray adhesive on the Battilizer® rectangle and position over the back of the hoop so that the Battilizer® exceeds the placement line by ½” in all directions. Spray the wrong side of the remaining fabric with adhesive and align with the Battilizer®.
