  • Final Product: What You Will Create

    Preface:
These mug mats are great gifts for all the sports enthusiasts on your gift lists, but I’ve found that unless you are an embroiderer or quilter not everyone recognizes their purpose. So I came up with a little poem to explain their use. Feel free to type it up and print it out to give with your gifts.

    I’m a little mug mat
    Just a little quilt
Place your drink and treats upon me
    To save you any guilt
    Drips and crumbs I gather
    That’s my job you see
    Throw me in the washer
    And dry me thoroughly

    Step 1:
Hoop no show stabilizer tautly in your hoop. Cut 10” squares of cotton fabric for the mat front and back and a 10” square of Battilizer® or low loft batting.

    Step 2:
Stitch the 1st color stop as a placement line for the fabrics. Any color of thread will do.

    Step 3:
Remove the hoop from the machine, do not unhoop. Spray adhesive on the wrong side of the back fabric. Position the back fabric over the placement lines so the fabric exceeds the placement lines by ½” in all directions.

    Step 4:
Turn the hoop right side up. Spray adhesive on the Battilizer® and position over the placement line.

    Step 5:
Spray adhesive on the wrong side of the front fabric and place over the Battilizer®.

    Step 6:
Run CS 2 in water soluble thread to tack down all three layers of fabric. Water soluble thread is used so that if any of the tack down stitches show after the mug mat is completed you can remove them by damping them with a wet cloth and they will disappear. However if you are sure of your cutting and binding skills you can sew CS 2 in a neutral thread.

    Step 7:
The free motion designs will be sewn through all three layers at one time to serve as the quilting for the mug mat. I used white bobbin thread in the samples, but you may use bobbins filled to match the top thread if desired. To maintain a neat look to the back I brought the bobbin thread to the top of the work by threading the top thread for CS 3 through the presser and while holding unto the top thread pushing the needle-up button twice.

    Step 8:
Then pull out a length of the bobbin thread and hold the two threads while you run a couple of stitches. Stop the machine and trim off both threads at the start of the stitching.

    Step 9:
    Complete the embroidery.

    Step 10:
Trim all sides of the mug mat by placing the ¼” mark of a see through ruler along the water soluble tack down stitches and trimming with a rotary cutter.

    Step 11:
Bind using your preferred method. A 2 ¼” binding was applied to the samples using the steps outlined in our article “Binding Small Embroidery Projects.” Congratulations your Games On Sports Mug Mat is complete!
