  • Designs used in this project

Final Product: What You Will Create

    Preface:
Directions are given to create your own pattern for your mug. The amount of fabric and batting will depend upon the size of the mug for which you are drafting the pattern. Draft the pattern first and then cut the fabric pieces and batting larger than needed so the fabric can be hooped, then cut down and bind with the bias binding to finish the mug.

    Step 1:
Gather the materials and read through the instructions before beginning. Print out a paper template of the embroidery design and color sequence.

    Step 2:
Be sure the design will fit within the mug dimensions. Use the paper towel to wrap around the mug and tape the paper towel to the mug to securely hold it in place so a pattern may be created.

    Step 3:
Use the Sharpie marker to draw dotted lines on the paper towel just below the top of the mug rim and at the bottom. Fold back the sides of the paper towel along the mug handle about one-half inch away from and on each side of the handle.

    Step 4:
Un-tape the pattern from the mug and cut out the pattern along the dotted lines. Fold the pattern in half vertically and check to make sure the edges all match. Crease the center fold. Now fold the bottom to the top and crease the horizontal line to find the center.

    Step 5:
Place a mark at the center where the folds intersect. If preferred, change the position of the design stitching so it will be facing the person. Place the design on the right side of the wrap if the mug is held in the right hand, or place it on the left side if the mug is held in the left side. For this wrap, the design will be placed in the center.

    Step 6:
Align the crosshairs of the paper template to the center mark on the pattern. Cut the fabric larger than needed so it will fit fully within the hoop and center the template on the fabric. Use a pencil to trace the pattern onto the fabric using a ruler to create straight edges and dotted lines to mark the curves.

    Step 7:
Place a pin in the center crosshairs of the paper template and then align the ruler along the crosshairs and draw cross marks on the outside of the traced pattern lines. This will help align the hoop and fabric accurately.

    Step 8:
Lift the pattern and design template and mark the center mark where the pin tip is placed - this pencil mark will be covered up with stitching. Center and hoop the fabric with two layers of tearaway stabilizer. Load the design on the machine and center the needle to the center mark on the fabric.

    Step 9:
Stitch the design following the color sequence (changing colors as desired to make it more festive for the holidays). After the design has finished stitching, remove the fabric from the hoop and remove the excess stabilizer. Cut a second layer of fabric for the back and a layer of batting larger than the wrap. Sandwich the batting between the two layers of batting and pin all the layers together.

    Step 10:
Baste the layers together using the presser foot as a guide along the pencil lines as shown. This will make the wrap slightly smaller than the mug. Cut along the pencil line. To create straps to hold the wrap to the mug, cut a 1 yard length of the bias tape and stitch along both sides. Cut the bias tape into four equal pieces, making a 45 degree angle cut on one edge of each strip.

    Step 11:
Next, use the bias tape to finish off the short side edges of the mug wrap. Then apply the bias tape to finish the top and bottom of the mug wrap, wrapping the edges around the sides and stitching. From the back side, attach the straight cut edges of the straps to the top and bottom of the sides, stitch in place and then flip the strap to the outer edge of the side and pin.

    Step 12:
Stitch the strap sections in place from the front. Try the mug wrap on the cup; you may find you will also need to add straps to the center of the sides as well.

    Step 13:
Tie the wrap on the mug. If I do this again, I will use elastic hair ties and buttons to secure the wrap on the mug.

    Step 14:
Another way to use this design is to create a little mug mag instead of a wrap.

    Step 15:
Congratulations on creating your Hot Chocolate Latte - Mug Wrap. Fill the mug with hot chocolate and treat yourself to some cookies, too!
