  • Final Product: What You Will Create

    Preface:
Using the Eco-fi FriendlyFelt® as the backing for the doll enables him to hold his head up, so be sure you have the stiff felt for that purpose.  As all of the clothes are backed with felt you will only need to put the loopy side of the Velcro on the doll and on the backs of the hats and accessories as the felt will stick to that without using the soft side of the Velcro. Be sure to use the stick and peel Velcro for fabrics. Please read the instructions for permanent adhesion which says do not use or disturb for 24 hours after applying it to the felt. Due to some small pieces these dolls are not intended for use by children under three years of age. The doll is sized to fit into a 6” x 10” hoop. The hoop in the pictures is an 8” x 8” hoop as there is not a 6” x 10” for the machine used. The ratio of the designs to the hoop size will look different than the pictures if you are using a 6” x 10” hoop. The hair on the girl doll and the boy doll are a little different so please read the separate instructions for each.

    Step 1:
To make the doll you will need a 9” x 7” piece of Eco-fi FriendlyFelt® in white for the back of the doll; a 9” x 7” Eco-fi Classic Felt in crème or flesh tone; a 6” x 4” piece of Dark Brown Classic felt and a 2.5” x 3” square of white Classic Felt for his underwear.  Hoop an appropriate piece of the cut away stabilizer in your embroidery hoop.

    Step 2:
Load design PDB01 in your machine and run color stop (CS)1 as the placement line in Bronze (1257)

    Step 3:
Spray adhesive on the back of the crème colored felt and place over the outlines; run CS 2 in Bronze (1257) as the Tack Down line.

    Step 4:
Trim the felt across the top of the boys head and ears. Scotch tape down the felt at the sides of the head.

    Step 5:
Run CS 3 in Bronze for a placement line for his hair.

    Step 6:
Spray adhesive on the back of the dark brown felt and lay over the placement line, run CS 4 in Bronze to tack down the hair.

    Step 7:
Trim the hair on the edge next to the face only, do not trim the outside edges of the brown felt yet. Use scotch tape to hold the brown and crème felt at the outside edges.

    Step 8:
Run CS 5 in white as a placement line for the underwear; spray the white felt with adhesive and place over the outline; run CS 6 in white to tack down the underwear; trim the excess white felt from the project; do not cut the crème felt at this point.

    Step 9:
Follow the color chart for CS 7 through CS 12 to embroider the face and details on the doll.

    Step 10:
Remove the hoop from the machine, do not unhoop, place the hoop face down on a flat surface to avoid loosening the stabilizer; spray adhesive on the white Eco-fi FriendlyFelt, the stiff one, and place over the embroidery on the back aligning it with the crème felt. Return the hoop to the machine and run the final CS in Bronze to tack down the back felt to the front.

    Step 11:
You will now cut around the whole doll through all layers 1/16th to 1/8th “ from the final tack down stitches. I found it useful to have 6” scissors to cut the general outline as well as 3 ½” scissors to trim out the smaller areas.

    Step 12:
Following the manufacturer’s instructions apply the loopy side of a Velcro Peel and Stick oval high on his chest and cut small rectangles of the loopy side from the Velcro Peel and Stick sheet to apply to the feet of the doll.

    Step 13:
The outfits in PDB02, PDB05 and PDB06 all follow the same techniques in that the pants, then the shoes and then the shirts are applied. Follow the individual color charts to stitch the detail at the appropriate times. Cut the felt as follows:

    a. For PDB02 Cut a 3” x 4” rectangle of Turquoise felt for the shirt; Cut a 3” x 4” rectangle of Blue for the pants; cut a 2” x 5” rectangle of white for the shoes and cut a 6” x 5” of white classic felt for the back of the outfit.
    b. For PDB05 Cut a 3” x 4” rectangle of Orange felt for the shirt; Cut a 3” x 4” rectangle of Royal Blue for the pants; cut a 2” x 5” rectangle of white for the shoes and cut a 6” x 5” of white classic felt for the back of the outfit.
    c. For PDB05 Cut a 3” x 4” rectangle of Turquoise felt for the shirt; Cut a 2/5” x 4” rectangle of Blue for the pants; cut a 2 1/2” x 5” rectangle of brown for the boots and cut a 6” x 5” of white classic felt for the back of the outfit.

    Step 14:
Hoop cut away stabilizer in a 5” x 7” hoop. Run CS 1 in black for the outline of the pants.

    Step 15:
Spray the pants felt with adhesive and position over the placement line; run CS 2 as a tack down.

    Step 16:
Stitch detail as called for on the individual color charts. Trim the felt across the top and the bottom of the pants; do not cut up in between the legs, just relatively straight across as in the photo.

    Step 17:
Stitch the outline for the shoe felt with the next CS.

    Step 18:
Spray with adhesive and place the required color of felt for the outfit over the placement lines; Tack down with the next CS use white thread for the jeans outfit, and the running suit, use bronze thread for the ski suit. Trim the felt across the top of the shoes; tape the edges of the felt together. Embroidery tape was used in the picture because it shows up better in the photo, but you use scotch tape as it is easier to remove from the felt.

    Step 19:
Follow the color chart to stitch the detail on the shoes.

    Step 20:
Stitch the outline for the shirt with the next CS.

    Step 21:
Spray the shirt felt and position over the placement lines; trim across the bottom of the shirt; tape the edges of the shirt felt to the edges of the pants felt; follow the color chart through the next to last CS to complete the detail on the shirt.

    Step 22:
Remove the hoop from the machine; do not unhoop; turn over the hoop; spray white classic felt with adhesive and place over the whole outfit. Return the hoop to the machine and run the final CS in Black to complete the outfit.

    Step 23:
Trim the outfits 1/16th to 1/8” around the entire tack down stitches.

    Step 24:
The shorts outfit is made in the same way of trimming and taping the felt. This outfit is made in a 5” x 7” hoop. The pants and shirt sew first and are then backed with the white felt; then the shoe placement line sews; the detail is added and then the back felt is applied before the final outline sews; after the final outline stitches trim out all pieces from the stabilizer. To make the shorts outfit cut:

    a. 3” x 3” red felt for shirt
    b. 3” x 3” blue felt for shorts
    c. 3 ½” by 3” white felt for the back
    d. 2” x 5” white felt for the shoes
    e. 2” x 5” white felt for the shoes back

    Step 25:
The hoodie outfit is made in a 6” x 10” hoop. For this design cut a 7” x 6” rectangle of heather grey classic felt, a 3 ½” x 6” piece of red felt and a 9” x 6” piece of white classic felt for the backing. Hoop the cut away stabilizer, run the 1st CS as a placement line for the pants and shoes; spray adhesive on the red felt and position over the placement line; run CS 2 in black to tack down the red felt; trim the felt close to the stitching at the top of the pants only.

    Step 26:
Follow the color chart through CS 6 to stitch the detail on the shoes and pants.

    Step 27:
Stitch CS 6 in black to outline the hoodie; spray adhesive on the heather grey classic felt and position over the outlines; stitch CS 7 in black to tack down the grey; trim the grey across the bottom of the shirt; use scotch tape to hold the cut edges of the felt together at the sides of the outfit.

    Step 28:
Follow the color chart from CS 8 through 12 to embroider the details. Remove the hoop from the machine; do not unhoop; turn over the hoop; spray white classic felt with adhesive and place over the whole outfit. Return the hoop to the machine and run the final CS in Black to complete the outfit.

    Step 29:
Trim the outside edges of the felt and inside the hoodie; add a small piece of the loopy side of the Velcro close to the center inside edge of the hoodie so that it will stick to his head.

    Step 30:
This is what the boy looks like in his hoodie outfit.

    Step 31:
Though they look more complicated these three Halloween costumes are very easy to stitch out in your 6” x 10” or larger hoop. For the Skeleton, PDB07, cut one black and one white classic felt to 9” x 6”, for the Lion costume cut one old gold and one white classic felt to 9” x 10”; for the Mummy costume cut two white classic felt 9” x 10”.

    Step 32:
Hoop the cut away stabilizer and run the 1st CS as a placement line; Spray adhesive on the felt and position over the placement line; run CS 2 as a tack down line, use bronze thread on the lion and black thread on the skeleton and the mummy; follow the color charts for the detail on the costume, the Lion has two color stops for detail, the skeleton and the mummy only have one; remove the hoop from the machine; do not unhoop; spray and position the white back felt on the hoop; return to the machine and run the final tack down stitches in black for the skeleton and mummy and in bronze for the lion.

    Step 33:
Trim the costumes around the outside edges and around the openings for the face; attach a small piece of the loopy side of the Velcro just over the holes cut out for the face to show through.

    Step 34:
The Cowboy outfit is run in a 5” x 7” hoop; due to its size the Cowboy hat is run in a separate hooping which will be covered in another step. Use the same techniques as described in Steps 14 through 23 for trimming and taping the felt as each new section is added, but in this case the shirt is added to the pants before the boots are added. To make the Cowboy suit cut:

    a. 2 ½” x 4” gold classic felt for the shirt
    b. 2 ½” x 4” cadet blue felt for the pants
    c. 2 ½” x 5” brown felt for the boots
    d. 6” x 5” white classic felt for the back of the outfit.

Run all outlines in black, the first two color stops will be a placement line for the pants; trim the top and bottom of the felt; CS 3 and 4 are placement and tack down for the shirt; for the color chart CS 5 through 7 for the gun, belt and holster embroidery; CS 8 and 9 are the placement line and tack down for the boots; follow the color chart for CS 10 through 14 for embroidering the vest and bandana; position the white felt on the back of the hoop to cover the whole outfit; run the last CS in black to tack down the white felt; trim as you did the other outfits.

    Step 35:
The Superhero costume is stitched in 6” x 10” hoop or larger as the cape is embroidered as a separate item placed above the suit in the hoop. To make this design cut:

    a. 2 red felt rectangles at 4 ½” x 6” for the cape front and back
    b. 3 ½” x 5” royal blue felt for the suit
    c. 2 ½” x 5” red felt for the boots
    d. 6” x 5” white felt for the back of the suit

    Step 36:
Run CS 1 in red thread as a placement line for the cape; spray with adhesive and position the red felt rectangle over the placement line; tack down with CS 2; spray the remaining 4 ½” x 6” rectangle of red felt and position on the back of the hoop; run CS 3 in red to tack down the back felt. Trim the felt on the front and back of the hoop at the bottom of the cape to ¼” to allow room for the suit to sew.

    Step 37:
Run CS 4 as a placement line for the suit; spray adhesive on the royal blue felt and position over the placement line; tack down the felt with CS 5. Trim the royal blue felt across the bottom of the suit as you have in the other designs.

    Step 38:
Run CS 6 and 7 as placement and tack down lines for the boots, trim the top of the boot felt and tape the sides of the felt together; follow the color chart through the next to last color stop to embroider the detail on the suit; attach the white felt to the back of hoop covering the suit; run the last CS to tack the back felt to the suit.

    Step 39:
Trim the cape and the suit; attach a small piece of the loopy side of the stick on for fabrics Velcro to the inside top of the cape.

    Step 40:
Place the suit on the doll’s front, place the cape on the doll’s back.

    Step 41:
The two caps are sewn in separate hoopings due to their size in the 5” x 7” hoop. File PDB09 is for the Cowboy hat and will run sideways in the 5” x 7” hoop. File PDB13 is the Knit Cap and runs in a 5” x 7” hoop. For the Cowboy hat cut tan classic felt to 7 ½” x 4” and white felt at the same size. For the Knit cap cut Turquoise and White felt 5 ½” x 6”. Using the previously described techniques run the 1st two color stops as placement lines and tack downs for the felt; the Cowboy hat has two color stops, see the color  chart for detail; the Knit cap has one color stop for its detail; spray and apply the felt back to the back of the hoop, run the last color stop to tack down the back felt. Trim the hats and apply the loopy side of the Velcro at the center front of each cap to be able to have it attach to the doll’s head.

    Step 42:
Congratulations your Boy Felt Paperdoll collection is complete! These Felt Paperdolls and outfits are sure to please children as well as your craft fair customers.
