  • Final Product: What You Will Create

    Preface:
Tone on tone embroider is elegant. You can to stitch these up in white thread on white fabric for a very formal look or choose a number of autumn colors such as pictured here for a more casual look. Choose embroidery threads that are just a shade darker than your fabrics. These napkins are 17” square, a dinner sized napkin. You may cut them to any size you wish, just add an inch to your desired size for a ½” seam allowance all around. Embroidery designs such as the ones used in this project should be less than 3.5” in either direction to fit well in the corner of your napkins.

    Step 1:
Cut 1 18” square of the solid Kona cloth and 1 18” square of an autumn print for lining.

    Step 2:
Lay your napkin on the grid of your cutting mat on point so that a top corner of the napkin and the lower point of the napkin rest on the same grid line. With tailor’s chalk make a center line about 10” long; measure up 5.5” from the bottom point and mark a horizontal line.

    Step 3:
Place poly mesh stabilizer in over your hoop and place the napkin fabric over the stabilizer aligning the vertical and horizontal lines with the marks on your hoop.

    Step 4:
Load the desired embroidery design into your machine, load the hoop and position the needle directly over the center point of your drawn lines.

    Step 5:
    Stitch the design.

    Step 6:
Trim the stabilizer about 1/4” around the design. Tip: When you pick up the napkin to trim the stabilizer hold the napkin up by the stabilizer and have the fabric always facing you as you trim around the design. This will prevent you from nicking the napkin fabric.

    Step 7:
Place the lining over the napkin fabric right sides together.

    Step 8:
Place two pins about 4” apart to remind you to leave an opening in which to turn the napkin right side out after stitching.

    Step 9:
Position your napkin under the sewing machine foot; starting at the lower pin, stitch around the napkin with a ½” seam; pivoting at the corners; stop at the first pin to leave the opening. Back stitch at the beginning and end of this seam.

    Step 10:
Trim all 4 corners close to the seam.

    Step 11:
Turn the napkin right side out.

    Step 12:
From the inside of the napkin use a point turner on all four corners to get them nice and square.

    Step 13:
Press all edges of the napkin; fold the seam allowances for the opening inside and press even with the edge of the napkin. Use your matching embroidery thread to top stitch ¼” from the edges all around the napkin. If you are using a variety of prints for the linings it works well to use invisible thread in the bobbin of your sewing machine so you will not have to change the bobbin thread to match each individual napkin.

    Step 14:
Stitch up your napkins in a variety of autumn colored fabrics and prints to enhance your Thanksgiving table. Note these will also make a great hostess gift.
