Girls’ Sparkly Holiday Dress

Materials
  • Embroidery thread as stated in design and to coordinate with print fabric chosen for dress
  • Stabilizer appropriate for fabric and design
  • Girls dress pattern in size needed
  • White fabric for bodice-as stated on pattern
  • Print fabric for skirt, sleeves, and bodice back-as stated on pattern
  • Sewing thread
  • Notions as stated on pattern
  • Pearls and sequins as desired

  • Designs used in this project

    Step 1:
Gather the materials and read through the instructions before beginning. Print out a paper template of the design. Use the instructions for dress construction (not shown here) for the pattern you choose. The design will be stitched on the front bodice fabric first and then cut to the pattern shape. Use thread colors that will coordinate with the chosen printed fabric.

    Step 2:
Purchase all the fabrics and notions as stated on the back of the pattern envelope. The bodice front fabric used was some white cotton fabric I had in my stash. Be sure you have a hoop that will fit the embroidery pattern.

    Step 3:
Take the pattern out of the envelope, find the pattern pieces needed, press them, and set all of them aside except for the bodice front. Determine where the design will end up on the bodice front by aligning the design template along the center front of the pattern piece. Press the bodice front fabric well—be sure the piece of fabric is larger than the pattern piece which for this pattern is placed on the fold of the fabric for cutting.

    Step 4:
Quarter fold the bodice front fabric and lightly crease. Mark all outer creases with a pencil mark—this will later aid in aligning the pattern piece to the embroidered fabric. Center and hoop the fabric with the stabilizer.

    Step 5:
Load the design on the machine. Align the needle to the center cross hair on the template. Remove the template and embroider the design with the chosen thread colors

    Step 6:
Remove the design from the hoop and remove the excess stabilizer. Press the fabric and lay it out on a gridded mat aligning the pencil marks that were at the crease lines to lines on the mat to square the fabric up. Now lay the front pattern piece over the embroidery at the center front and make sure the center front aligns with the vertical pencil marks. Pin the pattern in place on the left half of the fabric and cut out that portion of fabric. Flip the pattern over and repeat. Option: trace the bodice half on a piece of tissue paper and tape it to the other half to make a whole bodice front piece if that is easier for you to align.

    Step 7:
Cut out the remaining fabric from the pattern pieces and sew the garment together following the pattern instructions. Add pearls and sequins as desired to make the embroidery sparkle.

    Step 8:
Little girls absolutely love sparkles! Not called for on the pattern used for the project was a satin ribbon bow—so a roll of satin ribbon was purchased to make a waistline bow.

    Step 9:
One lucky little girl will love wearing this dress—and it’s finished in plenty of time for the holidays.
