  • Final Product: What You Will Create

    Preface:
The whole idea behind autumn leaves is to make them look randomly placed which makes this table runner extremely easy to make. The groups of leaves at the ends are carefully placed to give some symmetry to the overall look of the table runner. The center leaves were placed with some care to give emphasis to the actual center, then the other leaves are randomly rotated and stitched where ever you think they will look good. My favorite autumn thread colors are different than what is called for in the designs so I used my favorites which are: (1125) Liquid Gold, (1038) Barn Red, (1140) Avocado, (1221) Terra Cotta, and (1058) Sienna. Any leaf maybe embroidered in any color you choose. A 12” x 8” hoop was used to group some of the leaves and is nice to use if you have software to group the leaves, but all leaves may be sewn with a 5” x 7” hoop. The stems of these leaves sew fine if you want to overlap some of them a little. The choice is yours.

    Step 1:
The table runner used in this project was a Threshold 14” x 72” natural colored table runner purchased at Target®. The material used to make this table runner embroidered beautifully, but of course you can use any table runner in any size that you need for your table.

    Step 2:
If you have embroidery software and a 12” x 8” hoop you can group three leaves for the ends of the table runner. ALDO1, ALD03 and ALD10 were used in this grouping, but feel free to use three of your favorite Autumn Leaf Doddles designs. Make sure that the depth and width of your grouping fits into the 12” x 8” hoop. This grouping measured 7.32 high and 7.57” wide.

    Step 3:
To figure out the placement for this group take ½ the design height (7.32 / 2 = 3.66”). Two inches were added to this to raise the embroidery 1” above the 1” stitched hem of the table runner, 3”+ 3.66 = 5.66”. Ignoring the harder to measure .66”, 5.75” was measured up from the end of the table runner and marked across the table runner with a Frixion® heat removable pen.

    Step 4:
The table runner was true to its stated width of 14” so 7” was measured over from the side of the table runner to make a vertical mark creating cross hairs so that you can center the grouping on the end of the table runner.

    Step 5:
Hoop tear away stabilizer, E-Zee Tear Waffle Just Right® was used in the sample. This tear away is strong, but tears away very easily and cleanly from the embroidery. Spray the tear away with adhesive and position the end of the table runner over the hoop stabilizer so that the cross hairs you drew on the fabric align with the centering marks on the hoop.

    Step 6:

Either at your machine or in your software rotate the grouping you have made to point towards the center of the table runner.

    Step 7:
Stitch the design in your desired colors. Mark the other end of the table runner using the same measurements you calculated in steps 3 and 4 and repeat steps 5 and 6 at the other end of the table runner.

    Step 8:

Fold the table runner in half lengthwise to find the true center. Don’t rely on the crease that is in the approximate center of the product as it wasn’t necessarily folded in half. Mark cross hairs at the true center. If desired make a second group of leaves to embroider in the center. I made sure one leaf would stitch at the center, but rotated and placed the other two leaves randomly, just making sure that the total width and height of the design would not exceed the sewing dimensions of the 12” x 8” hoop.

    Step 9:
When embroidering the ends of the table runner I had the hoop positioned width wide to the table runner. When embroidering the center I placed the hoop vertically in the table runner. Whichever way you place the table runner over the hoop depends on how you lay out your leaves. Stitch the center design.

    Step 10:
Cutouts of the sample leaf designs were used in this picture but you can cut out around the leaf designs from print outs of the designs to determine where you would like to place leaves between the ends and the center of the table runner. Rotate the templates in any fashion that pleases you and pin to the table runner. In this case it was easier to use a 5” x 7” hoop to stitch the remaining designs

    Step 11:

Hoop the 5” x 7” with the tear away stabilizer and spray with adhesive. Position the leaf template you wish to stitch over the center of the hoop and press the table runner to the stabilizer. At the machine bring up that leaf design and rotate it to match the orientation of your pinned on template.

    Step 12:
Center the needle over the approximate center of the pinned on template. Remove the template and stitch the leaf.

    Step 13:
Repeat Step 11 and 12 as many times as necessary to embroidery the leaves you want between the center and ends of the table runner.

    Step 14:
Remove the tear away stabilizer and give the table runner a press to remove any marking pen.
