PATRIOTIC RUNNER

Materials
  • 8” x 8” Hoop
  • 75/11 Embroidery Needle
  • Design Template & Color Chart
  • 40 wt. Embroidery Thread per color chart
  • Three 9.5” x 9.5” squares of white cotton fabric
  • Three 5” x 5” squares of red patriotic cotton fabric
  • Three 5” x 5” squares of blue patriotic cotton fabric
  • Three 3” x 3” squares of white patriotic print cotton fabric
  • Backing fabric (size to be determined)
  • Four 2.5” x 9.5” strips for sashing
  • 2.5” x Length of Runner for trim x 2
  • 2.5” x Width of Runner for trim x 2
  • Magic Sizing or spray starch
  • No Show Mesh for each block
  • Heat n Bond lite
  • Temporary Adhesive Spray
  • Low nap batting

    Preface:
    A runner in red, white, & blue ideal for all of the patriotic celebrations.  Combine sewing and machine embroidery to create this festive runner.  


    Step 1:

    Gather the materials.  Read through the instructions before beginning.  Print the Design Template and Color Chart.    Iron and starch the fabric.


    Step 2:
    Cut three 9.5” x 9.5” pieces of white cotton fabric.
    Cut three 5” x 5” pieces of red patriotic fabric.
    Cut three 5” x 5” pieces of blue patriotic fabric.
    Cut three 3” x 3” pieces of white patriotic fabric.


    Step 3:

    Cut six 5” x 5” pieces of Heat n Bond lite.
    Place the rough side of the Heat n Bond lite face down to the wrong side of each 5” x 5” fabric piece.  Follow the directions on the package of the Heat n Bond lite to adhere it to the border.  Use a dry, hot iron for approximately 10 seconds using a lift and press action.  DO NOT use a gliding motion with the iron.  After each fabric block cools, peel paper backing before use.


    Step 4:
    Cut three 3” x 3” pieces ofHeat n Bond lite.  Place the rough side of the Heat n Bond lite face down to the WRONG SIDE of each 5” x 5” fabric piece.  Follow the directions on the package of the Heat n Bond lite to adhere it to the border.  Use a dry, hot iron for approximately 10 seconds using a lift and press action.  DO NOT use a gliding motion with the iron. After each fabric block cools, peel paper backing before use.

    Step 5:
    Hoop the No Show Mesh stabilizer.  Use the grid template to mark the center point and axis on the stabilizer.

    Step 6:
    Fold a 9.5” x 9.5” white block in half with RIGHT SIDES together.  Lightly crease the center fold with an iron.
    Fold the block in half again.  Lightly crease the fold line with an iron.

    Align the block with the center point and axis on the stabilizer in the upper right corner.  Spray the stabilizer with temporary adhesive.


    Step 8:
    Fold the block open and align with the center point on the lower right corner.  Press gently in place.  Fold fabric onto the left side of the stabilizer.  Press gently in place.  Smooth surface to remove any wrinkles or bubbles.

    Step 9:
    Load embroidery design.  Sew the placement stitches.  Lightly spray the area with temporary adhesive.  Place a red patriotic fabric block over the placement stitches.  Press gently in place.  Sew the tack down stitches.
    Remove the hoop from your machine, but DO NOT REMOVE fabric from the hoop.  
    Using sharp embroidery scissors, trim the applique fabric around the tack down stitching. Trim close to the stitches but not so close as to cut the stitches themselves.

    Step 10:
    Sew the placement stitches for the blue fabric.  Lightly spray the area with temporary adhesive.  Place a blue patriotic fabric block over the placement stitches.  Press gently in place.  Sew the tack down stitches.  Remove the hoop from your machine, but DO NOT REMOVE the fabric from the hoop. 
    Using sharp embroidery scissors, trim the applique fabric around the tack down stitching.  Trim close to the stitches but not so close as to cut the stitches themselves.

    Step 11:
    Embroider the finishing stitches around the red patriotic fabric.
    Embroider the finishing stitches around the blue patriotic fabric.

    Step 12:
    Sew the placement stitches for the star.  Lightly spray the area with temporary adhesive.  Place a 3” x 3” white patriotic block over the placement stitches. Press gently in place.  Sew the tack down stitches.  Sew the finishing stitches around the star.

    Remove the hoop from the machine.  Remove the fabric from the hoop.  Trim the stabilizer close to the stitching being careful not to cut the stitches.

    Bond the appliqued pieces to the white fabric using an applique iron.  Follow the directions on the package of Heat n Bond lite. (Press each area with the hot, dry iron.  Use a lift, then press movement.  Press for a few seconds then lift the iron.  Do not use a gliding motion with the iron.)


    Step 15:
    Repeat steps 5 thru 14 for other two blocks.

    Cut four 2.5” x 9.5” strips for sashing.


    Step 17:
    Place a 2.5” x 9.5” fabric strip FACE DOWN along the edge of a
    block.  Pin in place.  Sew a ¼” seam.

    Step 18:
    Place a 2.5” x 9.5” fabric strip FACE DOWN along the opposite side of the block.  Pin in place.  Sew a ¼” seam.


    Step 19:
    Place a 9.5” x 9.5” block FACE DOWN along the edge of the sashing.  Pin in place.  Sew a ¼ “ seam.

    Step 20:
    Patriotic zig zag fabric was used for the border.  Cut two 2.5” x 9.5” strips for border.  Place a 2.5” x 9.5” strip FACE DOWN along edge of the last block.  Pin in place.  Sew ¼” seam.

    Step 21:
    Cut two 2.5” x length of runner using the border fabric.  Measurements for the example are 2.5” x 35”.The length of the runner can vary, so you will need to measure yours for accuracy.
     
    Cut four 2.5” x 2.5” for cornerstone blocks.  The blocks are blue in the example.

    Step 22:
    Place a 2.5” x 2.5” at each end of zig zag border strip with RIGHT SIDE
    down.  Match the edges together.  Pin in place. Sew ¼” seam.

    Place the zig zag border strip RIGHT SIDE down along the edge.  Make sure the seam line for the blue cornerstone block lines up.Pin in place.  Repeat for the other strip.  Sew ¼” seam along the border strip.

    Cut two strips of red fabric 1.5” x width of the runner.  Cut two strips of red fabric 1.5” x length of the runner.

    Place a strip RIGHT SIDE down along the width of the runner.  Match raw edges of fabric together.  Pin in place.  Sew ¼” seam.


    Step 26:
    Place a strip RIGHT SIDE down along the length of the runner.  Match raw edges of fabric together.  Pin in place.  Sew ¼” seam.

    Measure the length and width of your runner.  Cut one piece of patriotic print fabric for the backing.  The measurements for the example are 15” x 35”.  Measurements may vary; so measure before cutting the fabric. 
    Cut one piece of low nap quilt batting using the same measurements as you did for the backing fabric.


    Step 28:
    Place the runner right side UP on a flat surface.  Place the backing fabric right side DOWN on top of the runner.  Line up edges.  Smooth the surface of air bubbles and wrinkles.  Next place the low nap batting on top. Line up the edges.  Smooth surface.  Pin in place.  Sew ¼” seam along the edge leaving a 4” opening on one end.

    Cut the tip off of each corner.  Be care not to cut the stitching.

    Turn the runner RIGHT SIDE out using the opening in the end seam.  Use a blunt tip to shape the corners.


    Step 31:
    Iron the border.  Fold the edges inward where you left the opening for turning the runner.  Pin the border in place.  Sew along the edge of the border.  A
    decorative stitch was used in the example.
