Final Product: What You Will Create

    Preface:
Add a personal touch to the next gift you make by using an applique frame with a monogram on a towel set.  A great gift for household showers, housewarmings, and newlyweds!  Begin by appliqueing the ‘Monogram Frame’ then adding the ‘Vintage Alphabet L’.  A single needle machine was used with a 6”x 6” hoop.  The design was resized slightly using Embrilliance Essentials software program.

    Step 1:
Two machine embroidery designs featured in this project are ‘Monogram Frame’ by Boutique Fonts and ‘Vintage Alphabet L’ by Gosia Embroidery.  The two designs were merged and resized to make the design using Embrilliance Essentials embroidery software.  The ‘L Monogram Frame’ was resized to make the design more proportionate to the towel
and hand towels.  The large design for the bath towel has dimensions of 5.0” x 4.5” with 9,549 stitch count.  The design for the hand towels has dimensions of 4.2” x 3.7” with a stitch count of 8,131.

Print out a copy of the Design Template and Color Chart for both sizes.

    Step 2:
    Gather the materials.

Read through the instructions before beginning.

Iron and starch the cotton fabric pieces.
    Iron the towels.

    Step 3:
Towels are made with a pile fabric which has a raised surface texture.  Hooping the towel in the frame could leave permanent hoop marks.  A ‘floating’ hooping technique will be used for this project.  Only the
stabilizer is hooped.  The towel is secured on top of the stabilizer with temporary adhesive spray and/or pins.

Tear-away Stabilizers are a temporary, paper-like stabilizer that comes in many different weights, from very soft to very crisp.  Tear-away stabilizers are carefully torn off after embroidery design is completed. A medium tear-away stabilizer will be used because of the weight and fabric stability of the fabric.

    Hoop the tear-away stabilizer.

Use the grid template as a guide to mark the center point and axis on the
    stabilizer.

    Step 4:
The paper template is the actual size of the stitch out.  Use the template as a guide for placement.  Templates from ‘Perfect Placement’ were also used for the bath and hand towels.  The template makes design placement much easier and faster.

Fold your bath towel in half lengthwise with the right sides together to find the center line.

Measure 2 ½ “ from the top of border to find the center point.  (If using the Perfect Placement template, no measuring is needed.  Just mark the center point.)

Mark the center point and axis.  I used pins and stickers.  The ‘Perfect Placement’ template matches the center point and axis with the paper design template.

    Step 5:
Align the center of the towel with the center point on the stabilizer.  Spray temporary adhesive onto the stabilizer.

Fold towel onto the stabilizer.  Press towel gently onto stabilizer.  Smooth the surface of wrinkles or air pockets.  Repeat this process for the other side of the towel.

Water Soluble or Wash Away Stabilizers are made to dissolve when wet and can be used as a back or top stabilizer.  When used as a topping, the idea is to keep the stitching from disappearing in the pile or nap of the fabric.  It will make the stitches be more noticeable and distinct.

Lay a 6” x 6” piece of Water Soluble Stabilizer onto the top of the towel.

    Step 7:
Applique Embroidery designs use fabric as an essential element of the design. Each patch of fabric will have 3 elements, the placement stitch, the tack down stitch, and the finishing stitch.  They will each be a different color in the design so that the machine knows to stop after each step.

Embroider the placement stitches following the color sequence chart.
Lightly spray the primary fabric with temporary adhesive.
Place the primary fabric over the placement stitches.

    Step 14:
The same process is used for a hand towel but with two differences.  A smaller embroidery design was used to be more proportionate with the hand towel size, and the center point for the hand towel is 2”.

    Hoop the tear-away stabilizer.
